A TOTAL of 844 <i>boda-boda</i> have been impounded in Kampala as the Police tighten their grip on the riders notorious for flouting traffic regulations.

A TOTAL of 844 boda-boda have been impounded in Kampala as the Police tighten their grip on the riders notorious for flouting traffic regulations.
The bikes, according to Police spokesperson Judith Nabakooba, were impounded across the city last week.
The Central Police Station (CPS) had 249 boda-boda, Katwe 141, Wandegeya 145 and Kawempe had 119.
Out of those held, 361 were released after the owners complied with the guidelines, while another 392 are still at the Police stations.
A total of 392 express penalty tickets were issued, while eight riders appeared in court over various offences. The penalties fetched sh23m
Addressing journalists in Kampala yesterday, Nabakooba warned that the Police would not relent.
Offences that the Police targeted included lack of valid licences, crash helmets, reflector jackets, parking and riding on pavements and carrying more than one passenger.
However, riders were undeterred and they continued ferrying passengers to and from several areas. Others sped away after learning of the Police presence.
Last week, Inspector General of Police Maj. Gen. Kale Kayihura rounded up errant riders on Jinja Road in Kampala.
The latest clean-up started on January 31, following complaints and accidents resulting from recklessness. A similar crackdown was conducted late last year.
Meanwhile, two people have been detained in connection with a body that was found under a bus heading to western Uganda.
The suspects were Richard Lwegyila and George Arinaitwe. The unidentified owner of the Kisizi Coach Bus took them to CPS on Sunday, The New Vision has learnt.
A driver, whose name was not established, also recorded a statement before the bus proceeded to Kisizi in Rukungiri. The body remained at the city mortuary.
