FORMER local government minister Jaberi Bidandi Ssali will contest for the presidency in the 2011 elections.

Bidandi, the chairman of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP), was yesterday declared flag-bearer by the party’s electoral commission.

His candidacy awaits the approval of the party’s delegates’ conference that will convene on March 18.

“The aspirant has fulfiled the requirements and submitted documents as stated in the nomination forms. I now declare Jaberi Bidandi Ssali duly nominated as PPP candidate for the 2011 presidential elections,” said Samuel Kisense, the head of the party’s electoral commission.

Bidandi said his party was on a rescue mission to save Ugandans from a leadership that has lost its “conscience”.

He said the NRM Government has trampled on the norms of a civilian society through disregard of the law and conducting itself with impunity.

He said the country was bleeding for the benefit of a few individuals in public office, who swindle public funds.

“Leaders are shameless. They are competing in stealing public resources. At an opportune time, I will ask my President to apologise for having presided over one of the most corrupt governments in the world,” he vowed.

Bidandi, who quit government in 2004, said the manipulation of Parliament was the epitome of institutional abuse.

“Most of the problems our country is faced with are a result of leaders who left school, went to the bush, shot their way back and captured power. The road that brought them to power is the road they respect.

That is why the regime can choose to buy guns in billions of shillings instead of ARVs to treat Ugandans living with HIV/AIDS,” he remarked.
