THE Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has given the Thomas and Uber Cup qualifiers in Kampala, February 21-25 a sh2m boost, reports Johnson Were.

Local badminton governing body UBA patron Abel Rwendeire received the sh2m cheque and applauded UCC for the timely support and promised transparency and better performance.

UCC acting executive director Patrick Mwesigwa promised continued support to the badminton body.

“It’s part of our corporate social responsibility to support community activities and we shall continue to support sports,” Mwesigwa explained.

Fourteen countries including Egypt, Seychelles, South Africa, Nigeria, Zambia, Ghana, Cameroon, Algeria, Kenya, Mauritius, Zimbabwe, Rwanda and Morocco have confirmed participation.

UBA chief executive Simon Mugabi confirmed Wilson Tukire as captain of Uganda’s team.

“Tukire is in good shape just like other players and we hope to win medals,” Mugabi said.

Edwin Ekiring, Africa’s number one player, yet to fully recover from an injury suffered in a motor accident at his base in the Netherlands, has opted out of the qualifiers for health reasons.

The winners in both the men and the women events will represent Africa in the finals of Thomas and Uber Cup due in May in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
