The Police have assured the public of security during the Mbale municipality byelection today.

The spokesperson, Judith Nabakooba, said the measure was aimed at guarding against malpractice.

“We have deployed ground and mobile forces to patrol the town and its suburbs. A Police constable shall be deployed at each polling station. Save for the candidates’ agents, nobody shall be allowed to stand beyond the polling ring,” Nabakooba said at a media briefing at Mbale Central Police Station yesterday.

The Mbale seat fell vacant after Wilfred Kajeke (FDC) resigned on December 20, citing high poverty in eastern and northern Uganda and rampant corruption in the Government.

Over 42,000 registered voters in Industrial, Northern and Wanale divisions are expected to vote, Umar Kiyimba, the assistant district returning officer, said.

A total of 72 polling stations have been designated for the exercise.

“Besides 288 polling officials, we have a standby team to manage the elections. Anybody with a genuine complaint against any of our personnel can forward it to us for redress,” Kiyimba said.

Eight candidates are contesting for the seat. They are Sam Wambuya (Independent), Godfrey Siranda (DP), John Wekesa Wambogo (NRM) and Jack Wamai Wamanga (FDC).

Others are Dr. James Shinyabulo Mutende (Independent), Wilson Woniala Kasole of the Forum for Integrity in Leadership, Musa Magomu (Independent) and David Amos Walyemera (UPC).
