Nakalyango, Bakaki storm U-18s round 3

ROGERS Bakaki and Daisy Nakalyango fought their way to the third round of the Africa U-18 badminton championships, after registering wins over foreign opponents at Sharing Youth Centre yesterday.

ROGERS Bakaki and Daisy Nakalyango fought their way to the third round of the Africa U-18 badminton championships, after registering wins over foreign opponents at Sharing Youth Centre yesterday.
Bakaki, 16, was on form, beating Egyptian Mostafa Morsi in straight sets 21-16, 22-20, to set up a third round clash against fellow Ugandan Kharmal Alidshan today.
He joined other Ugandans that included Ivan Kabagambe, 17, and Daniel Muhigo, 14, to advance to the third round, whose action starts this morning at the same venue.
Uganda’s top seed Herbert Ebayo,16, is due to take on a yet to be known Algerian opponent today, after his would be match was postponed because the venue was to be used for church service to commemorate Ash Wednesday.
The Algerian team had however not arrived by yesterday evening. If they do not report, then Ebayo will have to storm the next round on walkover.
In the girls’ event, Nakalyango, 16, was the only one standing, after all her teammates fell to foreign opposition.
Nakalyango fought hard to beat Ghana’s Stella Amansah in a 38 minute thriller on court three.
After taking the first set 21-17, excitement took its toll as Amansah recovered to claim the second set 16-21. However, Nakalyango regained composure, to take the final set 21-14 in the only girl’s game that went beyond two sets.
Other Ugandan top seeds that included Khotia Monisha, Jovia Kyomuhendo and Mable Namakoye all lost to foreign opposition.
Action continues today with the singles and doubles events at the same venue.
