PEOPLE suffering from diabetes and hypertension in Gulu have asked the Government and other partners for drugs.

The chairman of Gulu Diabetics Association, Severino Oloya, disclosed that the district lacked drugs to treat diabetes.

Oloya was addressing a meeting of stakeholders at Gulu orthopedic workshop on Wednesday.

He said there was need to strengthen the association in order to sensitise masses about the disease, adding that many people are dying of diabetes because of ignorance.

The association’s patron, Alice Lamwaka, said there are over 2,000 people with diabetes and over 10,000 with hypertension registered in the district.

Lamwaka added that the association lacked drugs and testing kits yet the number of patients is increasing.

She urged the Government and partners to extend special funding to treating people with diabetes and hypertension as the case is with HIV/AIDS and malaria.

District vice-chairman Mcmot Kitara urged people with diabetes to take the advice given to them by the health workers seriously so that they can control the disease and live longer.
