TOP seed Duncan Mugabe, got off to a comfortable start at the Nile Gold Uganda Open tennis championships yesterday at Lugogo tennis centre court.

He brushed off two unseeded opponents Richard Ssemanda 6-0,6-0 and Rwanda’s Michael Uwizeyimana 6-4,6-1 to storm today’s third round where he will battle seed six Olivier Nkunda of Rwanda on centre court.

“I hope to stick to this same game plan until the finals,” a relaxed Mugabe said after his second round game. “I am in great form and I want to win this tournament before heading for the Kenya Open next week.”

Uganda’s other seeded player number eight Robert Buyinza, also moved to the third round easily brushing aside David Munyaneza from Rwanda 6-2,6-4 and Carey Kalungi 6-1, 6-2.

Mugabe will battle Nkunda in his third round game while Buyinza will battle Kenya’s Francis Rogoi, in what is expected to be a hotly contested battle. The ladies will swing into action today with Uganda’s hope lying in Rosette Musoke and Lydia Ndagire.

Nile Breweries, the sponsors of the event under the Nile Gold brand, have sunk sh10m into this tournament which is part of the East african prize money circuit.
