ON a weekend when Uganda’s Orange CAF Champions League envoys URA FC were unceremoniously eliminated from the tournament, Brian Umony at least preserved Uganda’s representation in the tournament with a goal-laden display in Pretoria.

The Cranes striker struck the opening goal against Mbabane Swallows that eventually inspired SuperSport United to a 2-2 draw and 5-3 aggregate victory over the Swaziland champions to complete a memorable week.

Umony, who had previously scored a wonder goal against Timothy Batabaire’s Bidvest Wits as SuperSport clinched the ABSA Premiership title despite eventually losing the fixture 2-1, replicated the instinctive form he deployed during KCC FC’s impressive run last year.

Meanwhile, URA lost the plot in the first leg.

The tax collectors side was sent spinning out of the tournament after collapsing to a 4-0 humiliating defeat to Zanaco.

The Zambian champions, who had lost to URA with a 1-0 defeat in the first leg, stunned Uganda’s continental representatives with three first half strikes and another in the second.

“We really looked poor at the back and were also punished for missing great scoring chances in the first half,” URA coach Moses Basena later stated.

The result means URA fell short of what their counterparts KCC FC achieved the previous year.

KCC was eliminated from the competition, with just two-legs away from the lucrative group stages.

* SC Villa leaped to second place on the Uganda Super League table after hammering Boroboro 5-1 in yesterday’s only match at Namboole.

It was an indifferent result after Boroboro held KCC to a goalless draw three days back.

With the win Villa went to 39 points in 21 matches behind Express with 42 points from 21 matches while KCC are in third position with 38 points from 22 matches.

The league takes a break to allow the Cranes prepare for the Africa Championship league against Burundi.
