SUSAN Muwonge has notched a one-year sponsorship with oil company Kobil Uganda. The function took place at the company’s filling station on Bombo Road yesterday.

Kobil’s marketing and operations manager Peter Ochieng and Muwonge signed the agreement, which starts with the weekend’s Mbarara event.

The female driver will get fuel worth sh1.2m, tyres worth sh2.2m and an extra sh2.2m to cater for other expenses.

“This package is for only the Mbarara rally. We will announce more funding at other rallies as the expense keep changing from time to time,” said Ochieng.

An excited Muwonge said that she was changing her name to “The Kobil Super Lady” and promised not to let down the sponsors.

“What I can assure you is that I will be trying hard and will not disappoint,” as she smiled back before signing the contract.

Meanwhile, teenage driver Shafiq Ssemuju will have his maturity tested when he is flagged off first in the Mbarara Rally.

Ssemuju, who will be navigated by sports journalist Leon Ssenyange in a Subaru N10, will take off first in the absence of national champion Ronald Ssebuguzi whose new Mitsubishi Evo9 did not arrive in time.

“We shall aim to set the pace and hope to stay there until the end,” Ssenyange commented.

“It’s a challenge to open the way but we will determine our strategy after route reccing tomorrow (today)”.

The 2007 champion Ponsiano Lwakataka whose three-month ban was prematurely ended to enable him compete, will take off sixth.

The opening 2010 championship rally, organised by Mbarara Motor Club, will be flagged off at Lake View Hotel in Mbarara on Saturday. The event that has attracted 21 drivers, ends on Sunday.
