Dear Doctor,
My skin seems to react to many of the lotions on the market. I get a bad rash whenever I try out something new. How can I stop my skin from reacting? Please help.

Dear Stella,
ALMOST all ladies desire to have a flawless skin. There are a number of skin products on the market and choosing one that is safe to use can be a hustle.

Individuals react differently to skin products and some people are more likely to react than others. Skin sensitivity varies from person to person and is related to genetics.

Persons who react to other substances such as food products, jewellery and dust are also more likely to react to unfamiliar skin products.

An allergic reaction is a sign that the body has rejected a substance. This results into an inflammatory reaction, hence the rash.

It usually clears on its own though in severe cases steroids may help to reduce the inflammation.

The only way you can avoid allergic reactions is by avoiding contact with the product that brings on the reaction.

There are a number of cosmetics made for persons with sensitive skin. It may also be wise to get specialist advice before you consider using a new product.
