THE new Democratic Party president, Norbert Mao, on Saturday received an enthusiastic welcome from the party supporters in Jinja.

Mao, who arrived at about 12:00pm at Njeru Town Council park yard, made stop-overs at different trading centres in the district before holding a rally at the Busoga square.

Mao said if he wins the 2011 presidential elections, he will revive Jinja’s lost glory by granting it a city status and reviving some of the industries so that the youth are employed.

He added that when he becomes the president of Uganda, he will set up land boards to plan for land in municipalities.
Mao said he will make sure there are preferential power tariffs for the town since the power dams are located in Jinja, and vowed to fight corruption in the country.

He was flanked by the party’s national chairman, Mohammed Baswale Kezaala, who is also the Jinja mayor, the party’s vice-president, John Kawanga, former DP president John Ssebaana Kizito, the Jinja party chairman, Sam Kitanda and other DP officials.

“President Museveni has done a lot, it’s high time he retires because we need change in Uganda,” Mao said.

On Friday, Mao addressed a rally in Entebbe municipality, where he accused Museveni of personalising issues in the Buganda Kingdom. He said it was wrong for the Government to close CBS FM.

“It is clear that he wants to destroy the kingdom by denying it a voice and revenue. He wants to frustrate the kingdom’s efforts to grant school bursaries to your children. If he was abused by employees at CBS, why didn’t he deal with them
as individuals?” Mao asked.

He told the residents to vote DP into power, saying Uganda needs a president to overcome its political evils not one who carries a gun when called to mourn people killed in a disaster. Mao promised a minimum wage for Ugandans to improve their standards of living.
