UCU Canons will be looking to restore their lost pride after the confirmed return of ‘prodigal son’ Geoffrey Omondi. The point guard is back from a stint with Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) where he had landed a high profile job last year.

“My desire to further my studies has prompted me to return because they are offering me a full scholarship to pursue my Masters in Information Technology,” said Omondi.

The Canons just survived relegation last season and Omondi’s return will boost the team’s performance as his stature won KPA the league title in addition to a semi-final finish at the Zone V Club championship. He was also voted the ‘Best Defensive Player’ in the Kenyan league.

Omondi joined UCU in 2007 and led the team to 14 games unbeaten, a record bettered by power last season.

However, they have never made it to the finals, losing in the semi-finals to the Mountain Dew Falcons and D’Mark Power in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

“I have been training with the team and this season we are coming back with a bang to restore our lost pride,” emphasised Omondi.

The Canons have also signed Jimmy Enabu (Knight Riders). The team used the Sprite UCU Invitational tournament to expose most of the players ahead of the season.

Meanwhile, KIU Titans sent warning signals to their top basketball league rivals when they overwhelmed Power 64-56 in the final of the inaugural Sprite UCU Invitational tournament on Sunday.
KCC Leopards took the women’s title after they eased to a 39-28 victory over KIU Rangers.

  • Tecommunications company MTN has raised their sponsorship package to the national basketball federation by sh15m this season, writes Norman Katende.

According to the company’s sponsorship coordinator Rhona Namanya, they will offer FUBA sh75m up from the sh60m they offered in 2009.

The increment is aimed at helping the basketball body create their own brand.
