Ngooma Troupe claim Ntungamo crown

Ngooma Cultural Troupe emerged the winners of the third stage of Ekitaguriro Kya Radio West (Radio West’s dance fest), a cultural extravaganza the radio station and Orumuri newspaper in partnership with Igongo Cultural Centre, are currently running in western Uganda.

Ngooma Cultural Troupe emerged the winners of the third stage of Ekitaguriro Kya Radio West (Radio West’s dance fest), a cultural extravaganza the radio station and Orumuri newspaper in partnership with Igongo Cultural Centre, are currently running in western Uganda.

The contest was held in Ntungamo district the other weekend. Ngooma scored 257 points out of 300. The extravaganza was launched in Bushenyi on February 19 and is expected to move through 10 districts in western Uganda.

After Ntungamo, it went to Mbarara and then Kiruhura. Next weekend, it will move to Ibanda, Kamwenge and Kabale. The winners from each district will compete at Ekinihiiro Kya Radio West, the radio station’s eleventh anniversary celebrations on April 10.

Like all winners in the afore- mentioned districts, Ngooma Cultural Troupe won a cash prize of sh150,000. Kyehinde Traditional Group which came second won sh100,000, while Ngoma Youth Cultural group won sh50,000 for coming third.

Ten solo winners were given Radio West T-shirts while others got T-shirts from Igongo Cultural Centre. Thirteen groups participated in Ntungamo district.

During the groups’ performances, which included traditional dance, folk songs and solos, an old woman, Maria Bakihangiise, 89, excited the crowd when she so ably danced ekitaguriro, the traditional Kinyakore dance.

John Wycliffe Karazarwe, the Ntungamo district chairman, thanked Radio West for organising the extravaganza which he said will unite people in the region.

He appealed to the Government to reinforce the cultural and gender ministry. Radio West and Orumuri are part of the Vision Group.
