LOCAL people in the north made a contribution of 70% in ending the LRA rebellion, Gulu deputy resident district commissioner, Milton Odongo, said recently.

“We should all guard the current peace jealously so that it stays forever. The Government will not allow anybody to abuse the prevailing peace,” he said. Odongo made the remarks while officiating as a chief guest at the closure of a five- day teachers’ training workshop on the prevention of the spread of HIV/AIDS, targetting children below 14 years.

The workshop that started last week, was organised by the Savannah Sunshine Foundation based in Kampala. It was held at the Grete Mini Conference Centre in Gulu district.

Odongo appealed to the teachers to impart the knowledge acquired to their pupils and communities to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS. He said the Government wanted a joint effort in fighting the disease, emphasising behavioural change in the community.

The workshop was attended by over 30 participants, including primary school teachers from Gulu, Lira, Amuru, Apac, Pader and Oyam districts.

The foundation consists of a medical group working on the preventing of the spread of HIV/AIDS and how teachers can educate pupils on the disease.
