THE First Lady, Janet Museveni, has urged the youth to abstain from sex before marriage as their contribution in the fight against HIV/AIDS.

“You are the hope for the future, When you guard against HIV, Uganda will have responded to the fight against the scourge in a monumental way,” she noted.

Mrs Museveni was addressing student leaders and teachers from Ruhaama county, Ntungamo district, at the closure of a workshop on HIV prevention last week.

She emphasised that abstinence is the best way to guard against HIV/AIDS.
“Let it be engrained in your minds that you will abstain from pre-marital sex until the day you commit yourself to your future partner,” she cautioned them.

Mrs. Museveni observed that with the introduction of the ARV therapy, Ugandans have become complacent thinking that AIDS is no longer a problem.
The First Lady condemned teachers who defile students and students who get involved in fornication.

The Ntungamo resident district commissioner, Peter Rwakifari, cautioned that the students should resist the practices that promote sex before marriage. The workshop was intended to equip the participants with skills for abstinence.

The students pledged to campaign against risky behaviour through creating clubs, educating peers and designing posters on abstinence.

The teachers committed themselves to funding HIV prevention activities and including counselling sessions for students in the programme.

Since the onset of the AIDS epidemic in Uganda, about 2.5 million people have been cumulatively infected.
