PRESIDENT Yoweri Museveni has set up a committee to probe the land disputes in Mubende district.

Addressing residents of Myanzi sub-county at Kyanamugera Primary school on Monday, Museveni said the committee will investigate the land disputes in the district and make a report within weeks.

The committee will in particular handle the land issues in Bukoba village, Myanzi sub-county and in Kiganda sub-county.

Museveni said the committee will be chaired by former minister Muruuli Mukasa.

“Mukasa is conversant with the issues of Luweero Triangle. So he can do a good job in these matters,” he said.

He said State House lawyer Kiconco will also be on the committee and the third person shall be appointed later.
The meeting followed complaints from residents that some landlords were illegally evicting them. They said some of them had been tortured during the evictions.

Museveni referred them to the 1998 land Act, saying if they had put it into consideration, they would not have faced such problems.

The land in dispute in Myanzi is located in Bukoba, Kika, Namasengere and Lwamasanga villages. Kampala businessman Abid Alam claims ownership of the land and said he compensated the occupants. He plans to build a sugar factory on the land.
