THE Government yesterday regretted the death of two Kenyan students of Makerere University who were shot dead on Monday night.

It also extended sympathy to the bereaved families, the Kenyan government and its citizens.

Ignatius Nyongesa, 24, and Brian Amuoga, 21, died when a private security guard shot them during a scuffle at God is Able Hostel, outside the university campus in the Makerere-Kikoni suburb.

Amuoga was in his first year studying law, while Nyongesa was a third-year student of commerce with only two months to complete his course.

The shooting took place amid disagreements between supporters of Kenyan guild presidential candidate, John Kamau, and those of NRM candidate, John Teira.

Handing over the bodies to the bereaved families yesterday, higher education state minister Mwesigwa Rukutana said the Government was committed to probing the matter to its logical conclusion. He assured Kenyans living in Uganda of Government protection.

At 5:30pm, the hospital issued the duo’s death certificates and the education ministry’s vehicles transported the bodies and deceased’s property to Kenya in a convoy guarded by Ugandan Police patrol vehicles.

Makerere University officials and some students are slated to travel to Kenya tomorrow to attend the burial ceremonies on Saturday.

Nyongesa will be buried at Kabula in Mungoma district while Amuoga will be laid to rest at Shinyaru in Kakamoga district.

Amon Mugezi, the Ugandan student who was injured by the bullet during the incident, was by press time still in Mulago’s intensive care unit.
