CHAOS broke out in Yumbe town on Monday as residents stormed the central Police station wanting to lynch a murder suspect.

The north-western regional Police spokesman, Henry Alyang, said the incident occurred at around 5:00pm shortly after the suspect identified as Bashir Kavuma, had been transferred from Arua district to Yumbe.

Kavuma disappeared from the area after he was identified as the prime suspect in the murder of a fuel station guard.
According to Alyang, assailants killed the guard and dumped his body at his workplace.

The guard is said to have had an affair with Kavuma’s wife.
Working on a tip-off, the Police searched Kavuma’s house and recovered bloodstained clothes and a carpet.
Kavuma was said to have crossed to Aru township in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

But on March 11, he was arrested by boda boda cyclists in Arua town. The cyclists apprehended him for allegedly stealing their motorcycles.

“Information moved so fast and over 200 people stormed the Police station with stones and sticks. Even the bullets that were fired in the air could not deter the crowd,” Alyang said.

Several officers, including the district Police commander, Maxwell Ogwal, were injured and the office was vandalised, he added.

Calm was restored after reinforcement was called in from Moyo and Arua districts. Kavuma was later transferred back to Arua.
