THE national athletics federation’s dream of producing high jumpers could become a reality after getting technical support from their Japanese counterparts, writes Norman Katende.
Japanese Lisa Shigeta is in the country for the next seven months on the auspices of the Japanese International Cooperation arm- JICA to help the high jumpers and also teach coaches the basics.
“She is a volunteer who is going to help us a lot. JICA is paying for all her expenses. We have a tight programme where she will visit schools, especially at primary level, to talk to the children about high jump,†said Beatrice Ayikoru.
Shigeta, a professional coaches’ instructor with a bias in high jump, will also act as the high jump technical official in all competitions sanctioned by the athletics federation.
Shigeta is the second official to travel to Uganda to boost the field events.
German sports expert Gunter Lange was in the country two years back to help train field events coaches under the Olympic Solidarity and Germany athletics arrangement.
