IF you are a plant lover, explore what flower and plant containers can do to bring out your sense of style and creativity. When George William and Margaret Ssebuliba of Lusanja, Kitezi first thought of buying plant containers, they had no idea of the gratifying beauty their plant containers would add to their front lawn.

“We chose containers that blend well with our trailing plants stationed at the front lawn,” Margaret says. When growing creepers, priority should be put on placing these plants in areas that will aid proper movement and their growth.

Plant containers should be put near a column, on the railing of the verandah, and perhaps, around a window frame, which is not frequently used. Colours that blend with the shade of green will add tranquility and a calming effect to your set up.

Ideas for what to plant in containers and pots are limitless and mixing various plants in one container can create gorgeous potted displays.

One way of finding out which plant will thrive and look great in the desired pot is by visiting a flower nursery. The Ssebulibas bought their containers at sh6,000. Margaret says plants should be groomed to enhance the appearance and keep them healthy.

Dead leaves are no longer useful to the plant and have to be pruned to avoid pests. When removing the damaged area, it has to be done with extra care. The leaves, especially those with large surfaces, should be kept very clean. They can be wiped gently with soft moistened cloth. And make sure to regularly apply insecticide.

However, one may avoid the hassle involved in maintaining the plants because of the costs involved and opt for artificial plants. Artificial plants are the best option in circumstances when one cannot give regular tender care to the fresh plant.

When you opt to go artificial, avoid colours that do not occur naturally. For the exterior décor, it is important to use colours that bear the natural rhythm. There has been debate as to whether plastic or clay containers are the best for plants.

Most plants are best suited in the plastic containers because of convenience and lightness. Besides, plastic does not easily break like clay. You can use anything as a container for your plant choices. This will increase the drama and effect of your container garden.

Whatevercontainer youdecide to use, make sure there are drainage holes at the bottom.
