E. African Community rewards essay winning students

THE East African Community (EAC), in partnership with the education ministry has rewarded 10 students who excelled in the EAC 2009 essay writing competition.

THE East African Community (EAC), in partnership with the education ministry has rewarded 10 students who excelled in the EAC 2009 essay writing competition.

Maureen Logose of Nabisunsa Girls got $300 (about sh600,000), George Ocen of St. Mary’s College Kisubi bagged $150 (about sh300,000) while Kisubi Seminary’s Joel Kanyerezi got $200 (about sh400,000).

Ocen also emerged second in the region, hence scooping the Great East African Rift Valley Award and a cash prize of U$1,000 (about sh2m).

Other winners were Joy Cherotich of Amanang SS in Bukwo district who got $250 (about sh500,000), Timothy Agodo, formerly of Seroma High School, Mukono and now at St Mary’s College, Kisubi walked away with $120 (about sh240,000)

Those who received certificates plus $75 (about sh150,000) in the six-yearold competition were Kevin Anyang of Kaabong SS in Kaabong, Samuel Ajok of Aboke High School in Apac, Fredrick Odhiambo of East High School, Ntinda, Evelyn Sambazi of Kaserem SS in Bukwo and Ruth Babirye of Maryhill High School in Mbarara. The competition is an annual event involving Ordinary Level students in the EAC member countries; Uganda, Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania and Rwanda.

The education ministry spokesperson, Aggrey Kibenge, said the competition creates awareness about integration among students in the EAC region.
