A TOTAL of 140 youth from Arua and Nebbi districts have been enlisted in the UPDF in the ongoing recruitment exercise that started last week.

Col. Dick Olum, the leader of the enrollment team, said four women were conscripted from the districts.
He disclosed that several aspirants had been turned down for presenting forged academic documents.

“Many claimed to be university graduates. But some details on their purported transcripts like age, were forged,” Olum said.

In Arua, the exercise that was conducted at the Police grounds, turned dramatic when one of the male youth defecated in his pants during a fitness test. He was immediately disqualified.

Addressing the successful candidates before their departure for the training camp at Kaweweta, Olum cautioned them to avoid lifestyles that cause HIV/AIDS.

He assured the recruits that those who are disciplined would rise in the military ranks.

The Arua resident district commissioner, Ibrahim Abiriga, told the recruits to avoid tribalism.

“Interact and share with everyone in the force because the benchmark for your recruitment was that you must be Ugandans,” he said.

The Arua-based UPDF 409 brigade commander, Lt. Dede Ndyanabo, encouraged them to remain determined during the one-year training.

The recruitment exercise will continue to Koboko, Nyadri, Yumbe, Moyo and Adjumani districts before crossing over to the Acholi sub-region.
