THE Democratic Party (DP) president, Norbert Mao, has said he is not a joker as described by President Yoweri Museveni recently.

Mao said he is a leader who will set a strong policy base if elected president in the 2011 polls.

Addressing a workshop in Jinja on Friday, Mao said: “Why doesn’t Museveni respond to my policy issues like setting up preferential power tariffs and fighting corruption in the country? He only says Mao is a joker who should not be entrusted with leading the country. It may be a joke to him but not to a teacher who is getting a minimum wage or a person who is not getting drugs in health centres.”

The two-day workshop was organised by Advocacy Coalition for Development and Environment at Hotel Triangle in Jinja. It was attended by local and civil society leaders.

Receiving DP deserters in Buvuma Islands last week, Museveni described Mao as a joker.

Mao said there should be good inter-personal relationships in the multi-party dispensation regardless of one’s political party.

“It would have been good if Museveni invited me, Olara Otunnu (UPC), Kizza Besigye (FDC) and other opposition party leaders to accompany him to Bududa to visit the landslide affected areas. US President Obama did it when he called on Bush and Clinton to go to Haiti.”
Mao urged politicians to refrain from abusive language, which he said is common during campaigns.

“Sometimes when you are abusing your opponent during campaigns, you are bringing out your true character.”

Mao, however, commended Museveni for knowing how to talk to peasants, adding that this is why he (Museveni) has managed to stay in power for long.
He condemned opposition leaders who criticise government programms like the National Agriculture Advisory Services, saying such programmes benefit people.

Mao advised leaders aspiring to stand for an elective post to study their opponents’ weaknesses and use them as campaigning tools.

“I am also listing Museveni’s weaknesses. I will use them in the presidential campaigns,” he said.
