EDUCATION is the key to the transformation of Uganda, a senior army officer has said. Col. Phinehas Katirima, the UPDF chief political commissar, also said the army has vacancies, especially for well-qualified and academically competent Ugandans.

Addressing students, teachers and parents of Nakasero Senior School on Kabakanjagala Road at Mengo in Kampala recently, Katirima urged the students to join the army but only if they excel in their school work.

“The UPDF requires excellent academic performers,” he said.

Katirima was speaking as the guest of honour at the school during a bull-roasting to celebrate the school’s good performance in last year’s A’level exams.

As a long time parent of the school, Katirima said he was excited to see that Nakasero had improved greatly and is competing with the giants.

The school is one of the oldest day and boarding mixed secondary schools in the heart of the city.

To encourage the students to perform even better, the administration announced a sh1m award for students who get quadruple A, or the maximum 25 points at A’level.

At O’level, students who score the topmost aggregate 8 in the best eight subjects will also bag the same amount of cash.

Handing over the awards, Katirima also promised sh100,000 to any student who scores at least 20 points in this year’s A’level examinations. He also offered the bull which the students roasted.

Accordingly, Jackline Adroru, who scored 4As in last year’s A’level examinations, became the first winner of the sh1m award. Lawrence Kaddu, who scored 23 points in sciences, received a cheque for sh400,000.

Head teacher Peter Othieno said discipline, hard work and the encouragement of parents were responsible for the good results.

He noted that private schools supplement government ones in providing education and called for government support.
