When am I most likely to get pregnant?

Mar 28, 2010

IT seems you are either trying to get pregnant or you plan to use the safe days as a method of contraception, either way you may need to think twice. Safe days are from day 10 to 17 of the menstrual cycle. <br>

Ask the doctor with Dr. Gloria Ndagire

Dear Doctor,
I have a normal menstrual cycle of 28 days. If I had unprotected sex on the eighth, nineth and 14th days, when am I more likely to get pregnant bearing in mind that the sperms stay alive for four days, waiting for the ovum?
Julie

Dear Julie,
IT seems you are either trying to get pregnant or you plan to use the safe days as a method of contraception, either way you may need to think twice. Safe days are from day 10 to 17 of the menstrual cycle.

The safer days are believed to be between day one and five and after day 21.

However, research recently has shown that it is only true for only about 30% of all women.

This implies that for most women pregnancy is a possibility at any time of the menstrual cycle.
The cycle is more unreliable during the teen years and towards menopause.

Even with a very regular cycle like yours, there is still a 1-6% chance of pregnancy during the safe days. It is true that the X sperms are a bit stronger and hence last longer but this may not necessarily affect fertility.

If you want to conceive, there is a good chance you could become pregnant at any time of the cycle. If not, it is safer to use some other method of contraception.
