THE Democratic Party (DP) has advised Makerere University vice-chancellor Venansius Baryamureeba to let the guild council electoral commission operate independently.

“The chairperson of the university council together with the vice-chancellor should heed to the provisions of the laws of Uganda and students’ call to allow the electoral commission operate on its own,” said Fred Mukasa Mbidde, the party’s legal adviser.

Discontented guild presidential aspirants last week petitioned the university electoral tribunal, seeking fresh guild presidential elections.

The university council instituted a committee to handle the petition by six candidates, challenging the decision of the institution’s electoral commission to disqualify the election of Shaban Ssenkubuge (DP) as guild president in favour of NRM’s John Teira.

Addressing journalists at the DP headquarters in Kampala yesterday, Mbidde warned the Government against interfering with the guild operations.

Meanwhile, a source from the university guild said there were allegations of intimidation of some guild committee members. The source stated that this had prompted two members to resign.

Bernard Luyiga, the LC5 councillor at Makerere University, said: “The alleged interference of Prof. Barya into students’ politics partly explains the current instability at the university and is likely to plunge the institution into chaos.”

Mbidde also urged the university council to regulate political activities to enable student leaders manage their affairs well.
