EDITOR—The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) is in the process of rolling out online services for our esteemed customers dubbed e-tax system with functionalities that cover taxpayer registration, tax returns and payments modules. Currently, these modules are only availed to the taxpayers attached to Kampala East (Nakawa), large taxpayers and medium taxpayers’ offices.

The ultimate objective of transacting online is to avail our services to our customers all the time from anywhere and thereby reduce costs of doing business with the URA. As with any new service, some teething problems may occur but the URA has put in place a number of mechanisms to ensure a smooth transition.

Whenever there is a URA systems failure that leads to delays in remitting returns; penalties are not administered to taxpayers.
To enhance computer literacy, the URA embraced comprehensive training on e-tax with various segments of taxpayers. Following the e-tax pilot for the period December 2009 to February 2010; the URA captured 99% transactions online for the three pilot offices mentioned amounting to over sh200b.

Additionally, the URA’s Domestic Tax Department registered weekend transactions for the first time and these stood at 4,980 transactions for the online services. The use of e-services will improve service delivery which was not fully attainable with the manual systems. The URA is committed to addressing all issues raised by our clients regarding the e-tax.

Taxpayers are encouraged to reach us on info@ura.go.ug/services@ura.go.ug or you may call our toll-free helpline on 0800 11 7000.
