STANDARD Chartered Bank has donated sh460m to the Environmental Conservation Trust of Uganda to fund a three-year tree planting project.

This was disclosed at a recent press conference at the bank’s Speke Road branch in Kampala during which a memorandum of understanding was signed.

“The Standard Chartered-Eco-Trust partnership project ultimate objective is to contribute to the sustainable development of the country,” according to the press statement.

Speaking at the ceremony, environment state minister Jessica Eriyo thanked the bank for contributing to a noble cause and urged the corporate community to follow their example.

“I would like, on behalf of the Government, to extend our gratitude and sincere appreciation to the Standard Chartered Bank for the continued effort to supplement Government programmes,” said Eriyo.

The bank’s managing director, Lamin Manjang, said protecting the environment is a responsibility of the bank in addition to ensuring good access to financial services.

“As a bank, our environmental operational impacts are less severe than other businesses but by doing our bit to protect the environment, we can make a difference,” said Manjang.

The Eco Trust boss, Pauline Nantongo, said trees were important in absorbing carbon emissions and holding soil together, preventing environmental disasters such as landslides and floods.

She said the support from Standard Chartered was so far the largest amount the NGO has secured from the corporate community. The project will cover parts of Kampala, Jinja, Mbale, Mbarara and Gulu districts.
