THE youth in Busoga have been told to work hard and exploit their talents if they are to become a successful generation.

The Government Chief Whip, Daudi Migereko, who is also the MP for Butembe in Jinja district, cautioned the youth to shun dependency and use the available natural resources to accumulate wealth.

He gave the advice recently at Kamuli Youth Centre while officiating at the closure of a five-day workshop on youth entrepreneurship.

Funded by the United Nations Development Programme and implemented by Enterprise Uganda, the workshop attracted over 1,400 participants from Buzaya, Bugabula North and Bugabula South constituencies.

It was intended to equip participants with business skills to eliminate poverty in Busoga, which is regarded as the poorest region in Uganda.

Migereko urged the youth to participate in what he called the reviving of Busoga’s lost glory by initiating profit-making ventures.

He said the NRM Government had embarked on investing in the youth for the development of the nation. Migereko said the UN had spent over sh500m on the workshop and appealed to the participants to use the skills they had been taught.

He said a government-aided technical institute would be established in Kamuli district and appealed to the residents to make good use of it.

Enterprise Uganda executive director Charles Ocici said it is a collective responsibility for the Basoga to work hard and cease being recipients of donations.

“We have given you the knowledge about forming, handling and maintaining businesses. Will you again be seen on streets looking for office jobs?” Ocici asked.
