St. Lawrence University’s (SLAU) beauty contest, dubbed ‘Beauty by Works,’ and 14business ideas in form of companies was launched last week. The contest, at the university in Rubaga, attracted a huge crowd of observers and participants.

Many contestants exhibited great creativity. “Many people make candles, but we can ride on their weaknesses to penetrate the market. Most of the candles made are for lighting only, but we can make multi-purpose ones,” one of the contestants said.

Both Miss and Mr. SLAU will win cars, while the first runner-ups will get laptops. The beauty contest is running for its third time since its inauguration two years ago. According to the university board chairman, Prof. Lawrence Mukiibi, the contest portrays true beauty as the manifestation of the unbridled creativity abounding in every human being.

“This contest is meant to demonstrate the ability to turn God-given talent, desires, skills and dreams into entrepreneurial ideas,” he said.

The chief guest, the Minister for Education and Sports, Namirembe Bitamazire, congratulated the university for coming up with the initiative, which emphases productivity, innovation and creativity. The finale is slated for April 10 and there will be a raffle draw, where students, teachers and parents will win prizes, including tuition for one year, TV sets and ovens.

Last year, Laeticia Mugerwa, a first year student of public administration and management won the crown of Miss St. Lawrence University (Miss SLAU) 2009.
