THE Somalia terror suspect who had escaped from custody at the Kenya-Busia border has been recaptured while he was trying to sneak into Somalia.

Hashi Hussein Farah, said to be a member of al-Shabaab militants linked to al-Qaeda, was arrested with two others in the north-eastern part of Kenya, UPDF spokesman Lt. Col. Felix Kulayigye said yesterday.

He added that Farah, who has an Australian passport, was in the company of two other Somalis of Canadian and American origin.

The suspect was first arrested by the Kenyan police on March 13 as he was trying to cross into Kenya at the Busia border point.

Kenya’s Anti-Terrorism Police Unit established that he was wanted in Australia for planning suicide attacks on a Sydney army base in August last year.

He disappeared from custody hours later in what authorities now believe to be collusion with police officers.
Three policemen have been suspended over the incident.

After his escape, it was alleged that Farah had sneaked into Uganda but the army denied that.

Kulayigye acknowledged that prior to his arrest in Busia, Farah had lived in Uganda for more than a year.

He wondered why their Kenyan counterparts did not alert them that he was a terrorism suspect.

“For more than a year, this man had been living in Uganda and we did not have that kind of information on him,” Kulayigye told The New Vision at the time.

“If what is coming out is true, why didn’t our Kenyan brothers notify us in time? What happened to our information sharing arrangements?”
