CITY businessman Godfrey Kirumira on Thursday told court that the foundation of a shopping mall that collapsed last year, killing four people and injuring others, had been tampered with.

Kirumira said Mirembe Arcade, which he owns on Plot 5A, on Nasser Road in Kampala, was adjacent to another building that was under construction.

He said part of the foundation was excavated by his neighbour on Plot5B, leading to the collapse of the building. He was testifying against Muzanganda Musisi, the owner of the adjacent plot and the site engineer, Fred Katerega at Buganda Road Court.

“The contractor carried out excavations of approximately 3.2 metres below the foundation,” Kirumira informed court. He added that when he purchased the building in 1999, Kampala City Council had not declared it old or inhabitable.

Kirumira told court that he came to know about the extended excavation into his building after hiring a construction firm to assess and evaluate the cause of the accident.
