THE 2010 MTN-FUBA League starts on Friday without mega superstar Steven Omony. He is neither injured nor retired but none of the 12 MTN-FUBA men’s division one teams will have Omony in their squad as they tip-off their respective campaigns in the following two weeks.

The reasons advanced for Omony’s looming absence are several but the dominant view is that basketball clubs are wary of the costs it would take to recruit the 30 year-old point guard.

Omony left the Mountain Dew Falcons in February with a year left on his two-year sh72m contract because the club had defaulted on his payments for most of last season.

D’Mark Power technical director Peter Mubanda revealed that his club attempted to sign Omony after he left the Falcons but the player declined.

Omony remains one of the finest basketball players this country has ever produced and his return to the local league in 2009 sparked massive excitement.

That just a year later, a player of Omony’s skill and ability will play no part, will be a huge loss to basketball.
