JULIUS Okocha struck a contender for goal of the season as Firemasters dented SC Villa’s title-winning prospects following a 1-1 stalemate at Namboole Stadium yesterday.

With the race for top spot becoming increasingly tight among the top four sides, the best Villa needed in this high-tempered fixture that registered two send-offs, was three precious points.

The Jogoos looked destined to achieve that after Dan Walusimbi beat Firemasters’ offside trap and headed the ball past advancing goalkeeper Picos Masumbuko at the stroke of halftime.

However, the visitors had other ideas, jeopardising Villa’s pursuit for a 17th league title to a considerable extent, with a well deserved equaliser on 80 minutes.

Former Villa midfielder Okocha raced into the hosts’ half, out-muscled his marker Bernard Agelle before unleashing a thunder left-foot strike that caught Villa custodian Robert Odongkara by surprise.

In fact, Firemasters could have claimed all points from the game had Shafik Mukasa converted a penalty with just five minutes to go.

Both sides finished with ten men after Villa left-back Godfrey Walusimbi and Firemasters’ Phillip Gasana were sent-off.

In one of two games today, Police will have to overcome unpredictable Victors and revive their faltering attempts in trying to secure a top-four finish without their lead striker Peter Ssenyonjo.

At Nakivubo Stadium, Nalubaale must fast-recover from their demoralising 1-0 defeat to Bunamwaya if they are to stand a chance of edging Iganga.

  • The U-17 national football team regroups at Kisubi grounds today to prepare for the return leg of their preliminary round of their Africa Championship tie against Zambia. Uganda won the first leg 2-0, reports Swalley Kenyi.

  • The return tie is set for April 24 and the Uganda contingent of 25 players and officials leaves for Lusaka on Wednesday.

The Winner over the two legs will face Ghana in September in the final qualifying round.
