ANNET Negesa qualified for the Africa Senior Athletics championships in style when she set a new national junior women record over the 1500m on Saturday.

Negesa clocked 4 minutes 19.4 seconds at the 3rd national athletics trials at Namboole, to rewrite Catherine Webombesa’s mark of 4:23.74 set in Moscow in 1998.

On-form Justine Bayigga also ran all her three sprints inside the continental championships qualifying marks, clocking 11.7, 54.5 and 23.9 seconds in the 100m, 400m and 200m events.

The qualifying standards are 11.7, 54.6 and 24.0 seconds respectively. Negesa- who led the junior women team to the World Cross Country bronze medal finish in Poland- was in promising form, despite missing training for more than a week.

She was writing exams at Iganga’s King of Kings. She came from behind to beat Prison’s Janet Achola on the home stretch, hitting the Africa qualifying mark of 4:21.0. The junior athlete is now targeting the national record of 4:09.61.

MEANWHILE, Halimah Nakayi will have to battle for a slot on the national team, despite getting an invitation to the youth Olympic Games due in August in Singapore.
