THE information and communication technology minister Aggrey Awori has said he is not happy about the lack of a challenge to his 110m hurdles record at 13.9 seconds.

Formerly a national athlete, Awori set the mark in Rome 32 years ago.

The minister called on parents not to discourage their children from engaging in sports.

Awori said parents should move away from the thinking that participating in sports would affect the education of their children. The minister said that there is no basis for this position.

Awori called on parents to support their children in sports while officiating at the Daimler Cup schools competition held in Busia over the weekend. The event attracted participants in the U-13 and U-15 age groups.

“Take advantage and engage in all the sports that you can manage,” Awori appealed to gathering.

Awori said Busia had produced great sportsmen including former Uganda Olympic Committee president and national boxer Maj. Gen Francis Nyangweso, adding that the region still has the capacity to produce more top names in various activities.

The top performers at the Daimler Cup will compete in a regional tournament scheduled for Sudan later this year. The team will be named soon.
