GUNFIRE on Monday morning rocked Moroto district as security battled Jie and Matheniko warriors to protect animals. The regional Police commander, Okot Obwona, said the warriors attacked protected kraals in Nadunget, Ngoleriat and Lokopo sub-counties.

He explained that a joint force of the Police and the army shot dead three warriors in Loodoi village. “One warrior was captured after a bullet brushed him in the back,” Obwona said.

He identified the captured warriors as Lomuria Loruk, a resident of Nakapelimoru sub-county in Kotido district. Obwona said the warrior was in custody as preparations for his treatment were being finalised.

He said another group of four warriors also attacked Naligae village in Ngoleriat sub-county. “One warrior was killed and a gun recovered during the battle with the forces,” Obwona said.

This is the first time this year that suspected Jie warriors attempt to raid animals from Moroto district. Obwona added that the security agencies also shot dead a Matheniko warrior who was part of a group that attempted to raid 48 sheep and eight goats in Naligae village in Ngoleriat sub-county

A gun was recovered.
