OVER sh55m was yesterday raised at a fundraising drive to build a home for abandoned children in Bushenyi district.

The drive was organised by Bushenyi Woman MP Mary Karooro Okurut and presided over by the First Lady, Janet Museveni, at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala.

Okurut said the home would cater for the increasing number of abandoned children in the district.

She disclosed that she had acquired land and was now fundraising money to erect structures.

Okurut added that the home would have a school, health centre and other facilities.

She said with adequate resources, the home would be completed in six months.

Mrs. Museveni urged Ugandans to help the abandoned children.

“As the Minister for Karamoja, I feel inadequate to stand here because there are so many Karimojong children on Kampala streets and it is a wound on my conscience,” Mrs. Museveni said.

She called for joint efforts to find a lasting solution.

The First Lady said the volunteers who helped her start the Uganda Women’s Effort to Save Orphans did not have much resources but were driven by the desire to help.

The guests pledged to supply food and clothing to the home.
