Zimbabwean Jamie Whyte is determined to grab a second KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda rally title, but is wary of two Ugandans —1999 champion Charles Muhangi and Ponsanio Lwakataka.

“Muhangi is a wild old dog you can’t take for granted,” Whyte remarked yesterday.

“I have a lot of respect for him and he’s well respected in the rest of Africa too. Experience counts a lot in such an event.”

Whyte saw the other main challenge coming from Lwakataka who “is a very competitive driver too.”

Lwakataka, national champion Ronald Ssebuguzi and Muhangi ––if he competes –– shoulder hopes of thousands of local fans expected to throng Lubiri for the super special stage this afternoon.

Lwakataka singled out Ssebuguzi as the man to beat.

“His new car is superb. If he doesn’t get afraid of powering it he will put up a big fight,” Lwakataka said.

Lwakataka has upgraded to a Subaru N 8 and will lock horns with arch rival Ssebuguzi (Mitsubishi Evo9) right from the chequered flag at Lubiri.

The duel is expected to stretch for as long they will stay in the three-day continental race that has 21 crew from Uganda, Kenya Rwanda and Zimbabwe.

Scrutineering of cars is at 7am today at Shell Lugogo Bypass station. Muhangi, whose new Subaru had a fuel problem applied for late scrutineering.

After scrutineering, cars will head to KCB Bank, Oasis Mall branch for the ceremonial start to the third round of the Africa Rally Championship.
