THE Government is to set up a modern abattoir in Nakaseke, which will process animal products for export.

The abattoir will have satellite branches in the east, west and northern regions.

The agriculture state minister, Maj Bright Rwamirama, said the measure is part of efforts to promote export of high quality animal products both in the region and overseas markets.

A total of 22 slaughter sheds have also been built in the cattle corridor in an effort to improve hygiene standards, he said.

Rwamirama made the disclosure on Tuesday while addressing journalists.

He added that special vehicles will be introduced, for transportation of animals for slaughter.

“We are working with the internal affairs ministry to come up with a design of a vehicle that will be used to transport animals. We shall not allow any vehicle to carry animals in a way that violates their rights,” the minister said.

Rwamirana said the agriculture ministry is seeking an amendment to the Animals, Prevention of Cruelty Act of 1957, to provide for strict punishment for those caught mistreating animals.

Citing the Act, he said it is illegal to cause pain or injury to an animal through transportation or denial of food. However, punishment for offenders attracts a fine as low as sh2,000.

The minister noted that poor transportation of animals is affecting the quality of meat and other animal by-products, adding that veterinary officers will be deployed to monitor the transportation of animals.

Rwamirama also revealed that Tata, an Indian-based car company, is to set up a factory to process animal by-products including horns, hides and skins. The factory will employ over 5,000 people, he said.
