SERERE district’s Lucy Abel became the first fielder to qualify for the Africa Senior Athletics Championships.

She threw an impressive 48.51m in the javelin competition at the 5th national track and field trials at Namboole, Saturday. The African event is due in Nairobi late July.

Juliet Chekwel from Standard Athletics Club and UPDF’s Dorcus Chesang are the other athletes that ran inside the qualifying standards, together with Justin Bayigga, who again ran within the qualifying standard in the sprint events.

Abel’s distance was 0.01m inside the qualifying mark of 48.50m and enough for her to join the list of those who have already qualified. The event has been dominated by Annet Kabasindi for the last four years.

Chekwel, competing for the first time this season won the 1500m competition in a time of 4:19.2, inside the qualifying mark of 4:21.00.
