KAMPALA - DFCU Bank stopped businessman Frank Gashumba from repaying a sh178m loan after it discovered there was fraud, court heard on Friday. Gashumba and his co-accused Julian Katabarwa and Barbara Nyakarima appeared before the Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate, Vincent Mugabo, over charges of forgery, uttering false documents and obtaining money by false pretence. Prosecution alleges that in March 2006, Gashumba and his co-accused presented 14 non-existent tax numbers, claiming they were from the National Social Security Fund and the Uganda Revenue Authority. Further hearing is set for June 10.

Police arrests UMEME workers

MITYANA - Three people, who are said to be employees of UMEME, have been arrested by the Police over negligence of duty. Gavin Ssemakula, Robert Mayende, and Ivan Lukwago allegedly neglected their work, which led to the death of a three-year-old child at Kiyinda on Tuesday. The District Police Commander, Ben Mubangizi, said in the process of disconnecting power from a building recently, the three left a cable hanging from a pole. The child stepped on it and was electrocuted. He died on the way to hospital. The deceased was the son of John Bushobozi, a businessman
