TORO Elders Forum has blamed corruption for retarding the area. The elders, headed by the former Minister of Industry, Trade and Tourism, Prof. Edward Rugumayo, were meeting Toro stakeholders on Thursday at Kagote SDA Hall.

The theme was “Addressing the challenges of Kabarole district through accountable leadership”.

Richard Nyakana, the councillor for Busoro sub-county in Kabarole, quoted a 2007/2008 audit report by the finance ministry which said Kabarole lost sh225m in the 2008/2009 financial year.

“What I have presented is merely a 10th of the report on corruption in Kabarole,” Nyakana said.

He disclosed that some people had earlier warned him against speaking out on corruption in the district

On Wednesday, the Kabarole National Resistance Movement chairperson, Godfrey Nyakahuma, had opposed the meeting and asked party members to shun it.

However, Fr. Dr. Pascal Kabura of Fort Portal Diocese told the elders that President Yoweri Museveni had done a lot to fight poverty and corruption.

“Museveni has called on Ugandans to join him in the fight against corruption, but bad and unwilling political leaders, who we elect at lower levels, have disappointed him,” he said.

Kabura also said lack of morals and respect of culture among the leaders has affected the development of Kabarole.

The Toro Kingdom prime minister, William Nyakatura, said the forum will develop Toro and instill morals in the young generation.

Over 500 opinion, religious and cultural leaders, elders and the public attended the meeting.
