GOVERNMENT-aided secondary schools may be required to close during national examinations to free space for the big number of Senior Four candidates this year.

The pioneers of free secondary education will sit their O’level examinations this year, increasing the number of candidates to 350,000 from 217,000 who sat last year.

In order to find space for the candidates, the Ministry of Education is considering asking the schools to close during the examination period.

In his proposals on managing the exams, the commissioner for secondary education, John Agaba, said: “Given the big numbers of candidates, it will be difficult to allow the rest of the classes to continue running during the exam period.”

“Thus, the head teachers will be requested to use part of second term holidays to make up for the time the rest of the classes will lose during this period,” he said.

The ministry has hitherto banned teaching of students during holidays.
A number of schools found involved in holiday coaching have been closed.

Agaba also recommended that Universal Secondary Education schools set aside money for contingency from the capitation grant.

He said this money might be required to purchase materials required during practical examinations.
