THE secretary of one of the warring Uganda Amateur Boxing Federation factions was yesterday released on bail.

Nakawa court set David Kyambadde free at 4.45pm on sh5m non cash bail. His sureties Patrick Nsubuga and Tom Kiweesi were given sh8m bond.

The amateur boxing body led by Godfrey Nyakana on Tuesday caused Kyambadde’s detention at Jinja road police on accusations of impersonation and theft of its property.

Soon after granting the bail application, Chief Magistrate Deo Sejjemba issued summons for Kyambadde’s co-accused Dr. Ntege Ssengendo and Stephen Aciga. The three are expected in ourt on June 23.

Ssengendo and Aciga didn’t attend court.

Nyakana’s group was represented by its secretary Simon Barigo and organising secretary Sunday Kisuko.

Kyambadde pleaded not guilty to charges of theft of boxing equipment worth sh16m.

“This is a merely a misunderstanding of sports administrators that does not warrant such punishment,” Kyambadde’s lawyer Edwin Tumusiime told court.

Kyambadde’s arrest stems from a stalemate that followed the 2009 resignation of Rogers Ddungu as UABF president.

Sports state minister Charles Bakkabulindi appointed a committee that took over the federation’s electoral process bringing forth Nyakana.

But Ddungu’s former team headed by Ssengendo refused to recognise the Nyakana executive.

Kyambadde’s lawyer said the world boxing body AIBA offered Ssengendo’s executive the same equipment they are accused of stealing.

Recent links between AIBA and Ssengendo’s team include a 2009 world championship training offer for boxer Ronald Serugo.

Ssengendo’s team has on AIBA’s request also offered referees to officiate at two international meets.
