THE Nyakahita-Kazo and Kazo-Kamwenge road is to be tarmacked, Dan Alinange, the Uganda National Roads Authority spokesman, has said. “This road is important because it completes the national paved road circuit and is also an international transit route to the Democratic Republic of Congo,” he said.

Alinange said the road will also provide another important access to western Uganda, which is endowed with great potential for tourism and minerals. The road traverses areas with high agricultural productivity.

The project is funded by the African Development Bank and the Government. Alinange revealed that seven companies had been pre-qualified to bid for the project. They are Sogea Santom of France, China Communications Construction Company, China’s Zhongao Overseas Construction Engineering Company and SBI International Holding from Switzerland.

Others are China Henan International Corporation Group, China Railway Seventh Group Company and China Geo-Engineering Corporation of China. Meanwhile, the roads agency has also completed the designs for nine other roads that will be upgraded to tarmac.

The roads include the 90km-Moroto-Nakapiripirit road, Kapchorwa-Swam, Hoima-Kaiso-Tonya, Mpigi-Kanoni, Mukono-Katosi and the Kanono-Sembabule roads. Others are the 104km-Rukungiri-Ishasha-Kanungu road, Ishaka-Kagamba and Ntungamo-Mirama Hills roads.

Alinange said the Government was fulfilling its promise to the masses to upgrade the above roads. Most of the nine roads are gravel. “We could not work on them earlier because the designs were not ready for the contractors to bid,” he said.

He added that the roads agency had also embarked on the procurement process for consultancy services for land composition.

Work on the nine roads is expected to start between October and December.
