THE National Council for Higher Education has threatened to close
Lugazi University over alleged failure to meet the minimum conditions in the last four years of its operation.
The university is accused of failing to recruit qualified staff, besides failure to pay the available lecturers.
It is also blamed for not integrating internship in its academic programmes to enable students gain practical experience. As a result, the council asserted that the students were not getting value for their money. The council has henceforth suspended the admission of students until further notice.
“Lugazi has failed to meet the requirements of a university. They cannot stay,†Prof. A.B. Kasozi, the council’s executive director, said on phone.
Phenny Birungi, the assistant director, explained that the university had not paid its staff for the last two years. Hence, lecturers withheld students’ results.
Alfred Higenyi, the university’s director, told Saturday Vision that the management held a meeting to solve the problem but declined to divulge the details.
Last year, students staged a strike after spending two months without lectures. T
The Police also deployed at the university in February this year to quell another violent strike by the students.
