Vice-President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya has asked the electorate to carefully scrutinise parliamentary candidates in next year’s general elections. “The role of a member of Parliament is to bring development to the constituency,” Bukenya said.

He added: “Unfortunately, the case in most parts of the country has been different.” Bukenya said the right MP helps people improve their lot by, for instance, helping them harvest rain water.

Bukenya warned against “rushing” to vote. “Give your mandate to people who have demonstrated the spirit of developing the constituency, you won’t regret.”

Bukenya made the remarks while fundraising for sh300m to build a hostel for the Sacred Heart Church in Tororo town on Sunday. He also commissioned a sh130m theatre at St. Anthony’s Hospital. The family of Tororo Municipality MP Sanjay Tanna and the Asian community donated the money for the theatre.

Bukenya praised Sanjay and the Asian community for their “patriotism and compassion”.
