WORLD Mountain Running champion Geoffrey Kusuro will be battling with a host of local talent in the 5000m, when the regional track and field championships kick off Saturday in Bugembe, Norman Katende and James Bakama report.

The event has cash prizes attached for the top three individual athletes, courtesy of athletics federation sponsors MTN, and also team prizes for the top three clubs.

Kusuro, coming off a ninth place finish at the Sunfeast World 10km road run in Bangalore, India on Sunday, will battle with some of the local stars as he gears up for the European circuit next month.

Meanwhile, a strong Kenyan entry is expected in the second Hared Source of the Nile Marathon on Sunday.
“We had registration points in Kenya that we expect to attract several seasoned runners,” said Nourdine Yusuf, a member of event’s organising committee. Kenya’s David Tarus won the inaugural race last year.

Athletes have this week been trying out the course that will have its flag-off and finish at the Source of the Nile.
