AFTER setting a new national 1500m junior record of 4 minutes 19.4 seconds, Annet Negesa will brace herself for a more hostile field of seniors from the region in Khartoum today.

Norman Katende reports that Negesa and sprinter Ali Ngaimoko left Tuesday for the Pan Africa Grand Prix meet, which will attract top runners from the region.

Having clocked a season best of 2 minutes 8.6 seconds in the second national trial at Namboole, Negesa, who is eyeing a podium finish at the IAAF world junior athletics championships in Moncton, Canada later this year, will need to run below 2:05.39 to beat Joyce Adiru’s 28-year record.

In Khartoum, Negesa faces a challenge posed by runners from Kenya, Ethiopia and hosts Sudan.
Ngaimoko will on his part be fighting for a new personal best, also aware that a good time will earn him an invitation to more lucrative competitions in Europe.

Meanwhile, other mid distance runners will head to Jinja on Saturday for the annual Kyabazinga championships to be held at Bugembe stadium.
